WSJ: General Motors may go with Google Apps rather than Microsoft (Seattle Times)

The Wall Street Journal reports that Google has signed a deal to provide email
and online-collaboration software to more than 100,000 employees at General
Motors -- though the deal hasn't been finalized yet.

The contract requires Google to meet certain requirements before GM makes a
final decision on whether to deploy Google Apps, according to the Journal,
which cited people familiar with the matter

General Motors has been using IBM's Lotus Notes, but in recent months, Google
and Microsoft vied for the contract to provideWeb-based email and
collaboration software to GM.

"Assuming Google wins final approval, the deal could be a watershed moment in
Google's quest to challenge Microsoft Corp.'s dominance in application
software, marking the largest deal since the Internet company began selling
what it calls Google Apps in 2007," the Journal reported.

Microsoft has long been the dominant provider to large organizations of email,
collaboration software and applications in its Office suite. In recent years,
it's been making a big push to offer those software and services in the cloud.
Such Microsoft cloud offerings include Office 365 and Business Productivity
Online Suite (BPOS).
